Heidelberg lights up its castle with fireworks this
summer
The Schloß will be set aglow on June 7, July 12, and September 6
HEIDELBERG, GERMANY -- The "Winter King" Prince Elector Friedrich V already
appreciated the overwhelming beauty of a fireworks display whose backdrop is the
romantic Heidelberg castle. He captivated his newlywed bride, the English
princess Elizabeth Stuart, with such a dazzling spectacle as a welcome gesture
in 1613.
The castle ruins were first illuminated from the inside on 20th July 1807,
when crown prince Karl Ludwig and his wife visited the city. At that time, the
pyrotechnician Nikolaus Kesselbach just set normal wood aglow. On 31st May 1860,
his son introduced the slow burning "Bengal Fires" to illuminate the ruins
atmospherically.
The 1910 entry in the Heidelberg city archives entitled this event "the first
official castle illumination." Today, the splendor has lost none of its appeal.
In the summer months, the castle is set aglow three times every year.
In 2008, Heidelberg Marketing invites guests to witness the illuminations on
the following dates:
First illumination: 7th June.
Second illumination: 12th July.
Third illumination: 6th September.
The illuminations start at 10.15 pm, after dark.
About this year's fireworks
The Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung raved about the illumination in September 2007 as
"the most impressive fireworks ever."
"We are of course keen to keep up these standards, which will gladly be
possible with our new partner, Heidelberg mobil International GmbH," states
Heidelberg Marketing-MD Vera Cornelius.
Encouraged by the success of the last illumination, pyrotechnician Thomas
Fischer will continue his new concept. The fireworks are launched at an angle
parallel to the Neckar’s water flow. Therefore, the amount of space for
audiences near the Old Bridge, in the cafés, and along the Neckar streets on
either side has gone up considerably, affording the best views of the spectacle.
The illuminations are of course also a special treat to watch from a Neckar
boat. However, due to the different launch angle, former "hot spots"
Theodor-Heuss-Bridge and Neckar banks are less attractive.
Concerts are an illumination bonus
Prior to every illumination, there is a concert in Heiliggeistkirche (Church
of the Holy Spirit). On 7th June, the Mannheim Clarinet Ensemble conducted by
Ralph Schwarz beckons with an array of works by Bach, Mozart, Bellini, Widor,
Csollany and Brubeck. Tickets are available via Heidelberg Ticket Tel: 06221 –
58 20000.
